On Saturday we took a trip through Civil War History. We stopped through Harpers Ferry, where Washington established the first United States military armory. It is also the place where John Brown tried to steal guns to support his well intentioned, yet extremist means to abolish slavery. The Civil War began shortly thereafter. Later we stopped in Antietam. This, the bloodiest battle that took more lives per day, than any other battle in recent American history, is significant to the Freeman Family. Nate's Ancestor, Alpheus Williams - a law graduate of Yale a lover of travel (sound familiar?...except the Yale part of course :)), and a General for the Union Army during the Civil War, happened upon the plans of the Confederate Army (given to him by a Soldier), which helped shape the direction of that War - stopping Lee's progress North. It was sobering to be on those fields and think of the horror of what happened there, and the sacrifices that were made for unity and freedom for all. Sweet to be there and remember a significant part of history for our Country, and for our little family as well.
